Hiring a PI

Why Chicago Residents Use YouTube to Vet Their PI

Before hiring a private investigator in Chicago, more people are turning to YouTube to separate the real pros from the pretenders. Here is why that matters.

Why Chicago Residents Use YouTube to Vet Their PI

You would not hire a contractor without checking their reviews. You would not pick a doctor without looking them up online. So why would you hand over a retainer to a private investigator you know nothing about?

More people in Chicago are asking that question — and a growing number of them are turning to YouTube to find the answer.

The Problem With Hiring a PI Blind

Illinois has thousands of licensed private investigators. Some are former law enforcement with decades of field experience. Others are weekend hobbyists who passed a licensing exam and bought a camera.

From the outside, they can look identical. Same website. Same promises. Same rates.

The difference only becomes clear after you have already paid — and by then, you may have wasted your retainer on surveillance footage that will not hold up, a background report pulled from a free database, or a PI who stopped returning calls after week one.

Why YouTube Changes the Equation

A website is marketing. A YouTube channel is evidence.

When a PI posts educational content on YouTube, you get to see how they think, how they communicate, and whether they actually know what they are talking about. You can watch them explain surveillance law in Illinois. You can hear them describe what a real background check covers versus what the $19.99 online services give you. You can judge for yourself whether this is someone you would trust with a sensitive personal matter.

That is a fundamentally different level of vetting than reading a bio page.

What to Look for on a PI's YouTube Channel

Not all PI content is created equal. Here is what separates useful educational content from self-promotional noise:

Specificity over generality. A PI who says "we handle all types of cases" is not teaching you anything. Look for someone who explains the actual process — how surveillance routes are planned, what LPR technology does, how digital evidence is preserved.

Honest about limitations. A credible PI will tell you what they cannot do, not just what they can. Illinois law places real restrictions on surveillance, GPS tracking, and access to certain records. If a PI never mentions any of that, be skeptical.

License transparency. Any licensed Illinois PI should be able to tell you their license number on camera without hesitation. You can verify it yourself at the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation website.

No Hollywood theatrics. Real investigative work is methodical, patient, and often unglamorous. If the content looks like a spy movie, it is probably more entertainment than education.

The Questions You Should Be Able to Answer Before You Hire

After watching a PI's content, you should be able to answer these questions with confidence:

  • Is this person licensed in Illinois, and can I verify it?
  • Do they explain their billing structure clearly — hourly rate, retainer, minimum hours?
  • Have they worked cases similar to mine?
  • Do they communicate in a way I can understand and trust?
  • Are they honest about what evidence is realistically obtainable?

If you cannot answer those questions, you need more information before you write a check.
